RainChangers: Big Impact- Low Cost
Above all else, this is the story of how to do what you can, where you can, when you can. Being a good environmental neighbor to our human and non-human neighbors isn’t about being perfect, but it is about making it better than you found it as much as you reasonably can. Polluted runoff is Puget Sound’s largest source of pollution (and in my neighborhood it also causes sewer overflows – eww!). Through a low cost, green infrastructure landscape retrofit that was largely paid for by a RainWise rebate, I was able to reduce the runoff from my property 100% (over 50,000 gallons per year!). My combination of rain cisterns (950 gallons of storage) and rain gardens do all that for our shared environment, while reducing my water bill and helping me grow a ton of fruits and vegetables to boot. Being a Rain Changer means being a good neighbor by making a change where you can, not breaking the bank or giving up your beautiful yard. **disclaimer: green infrastructure may also provide habitat, air quality, climate and human health benefits, and is highly contagious.
